Dementia Week at Groveland Park

From 15th – 21st May, it was Dementia Week and here at Groveland Park, we wanted to get involved. We put on a week of fun and exciting things to do, and our residents really loved it.

In addition to our usual weekly activities, we held a community coffee morning, a Bollywood workshop, we were visited by our friends from Safe Haven Animal Rescue, we hosted the Golden Groove Band, we held a Visual Colourful & Interactive Magic Show, we had live entertainment here in our home, a Pilates class and we even had stimulating energizing fun with Gfitness!

We decided to sell handmade knitted brooches like last year, made by our residents and their family members, with all money raised donated to Alzheimer’s Society. Thank you to everyone who made and bought brooches! It really was a great week.

A visit from Safe Haven Animal Rescue

Thumbnail for A visit from Safe Haven Animal Rescue
Safe Haven Animal Rescue came to visit us here at Groveland Park last month, bringing a wonderful array of animals to see the residents! All the animals love lots of cuddles, which made this sensory session a full success.

This local family-run rescue centre’s main aim is to provide a safe shelter for animals in need, no matter how big or small they are – they endeavour to strengthen these animals and find their forever homes. They’re a non-profit organisation that solely rely on the goodwill of donations and their own investments.

The rescue centre started off with just horses but that soon expanded, and they now have a tortoise, ducks, chickens and much more. If you would like to find out more about them, please feel free to contact safehavenanimals@hotmail.com. We would love to see Safe Haven here again soon.

Making Easter bonnets with Mayplace Primary School

Thumbnail for Making Easter bonnets with Mayplace Primary School
We got creative with our Easter celebrations, decorating colourful hats. The children from our local primary school came to join us too, showing off the bonnets they had made!

Over the years, we have built up a wonderful relationship with Mayplace Primary School, and the children often come and visit us here at Groveland Park, whether it’s to sing to the residents, to show off their amazing work or just to have a little chat. We take great pleasure in visiting the school too, with invitations to their assemblies and shows.

The residents really do love being part of the audience when we visit the school, and it has had a marvellous impact on them, giving them a sense of purpose as the children relate to them without judgement. The children also greatly benefit from the undivided attention of people who enjoy spending time listening to them and sharing stories.

As always, we’re already looking forward to their next visit!

April Events at Groveland Park

We're really excited about our two events taking place at Groveland Park in April, and we really hope you can join us.

The first act is taking place on Friday 5th April and it's an Elvis Presley Tribute Act! It's as close as we could get to the real thing and we can't wait to see those blue suede shoes up close. How better to celebrate spring than with the King of Rock 'n' Roll?

Our second event in April is on Tuesday 23rd April - it's the Cockney Duo! Cheryl and Marcus will be here to entertain us with a fantastic selection of Cockney singalong favourites as we celebrate St. George's Day.

As always, our events are completely free of charge, including refreshments. Please RSVP to events@grovelandpark.co.uk or 01322 523090. Both April events begin at 6:45pm - we hope to see you at one or both of the great nights we have planned at Groveland Park this April!

Wonderful Workshops with Creative Mojo

This month, we welcomed Creative Mojo craft workshops into our home for the first time, for those looking to get creative. At these workshops, there are no limitations, with tailor-made projects focusing on seasonal, cultural, art history and popular art movements, creating artwork that can be displayed and shared as a group, giving lasting enjoyment at the end of every session.

After the first session, the residents – or should we say art students? – had put together a wonderful piece of 3D art that has been put display here in our home. Everyone who has seen it has commented on how beautiful it is and they are truly in awe of what we have produced.
