The Diamond Jubilee Club

The Diamond Jubilee Club
On the last Tuesday morning of every month from 10.30am until 12.15pm, the Diamond Jubilee Club runs at Bexley Christian Life Centre. And we had a great time last week.

Our visit to the diamond jubilee club is always one of our favourite places to visit as we have been for many years now - it's a place where local care homes and friends of the community come to visit. It is designed for the over 65s in our community who are lonely and isolated and looking for friendship, and also those who experience memory loss. It is open to all who feel they would benefit from a morning of music and song, where professional artistes are sometimes invited alongside our Pastor Del and his wife Carol. We play hymns and entertain with songs from the shows, sing-a-longs, and melodies from the 1940s to present day. Although music is used as reminiscence therapy, it is simply for fun as well!

The club can give carers a well-deserved break, but carers are also very welcome to attend. The team of volunteers provide simple crafts and there is always a chance for a chat over tea or coffee and homemade cakes. Prayer is offered to those who would benefit! The club is entirely free of charge.

All aboard! It must be our annual train trip

All aboard! It must be our annual train trip
An outing that’s always worth waiting for is our yearly visit to Kent & East Sussex railway, booked by popular demand over to two separate days earlier this month for our residents to enjoy.

We went on a round trip starting at Tenterden station, going through Bodiam. The 21-mile route took us through scenic countryside, and everyone took the time to relax in the beautifully restored carriages and to enjoy a lovely ploughman’s lunch. It’s amazing how nice it can be just to watch the world go by!

We saw Bodiam Castle – complete with its moat and impressive ramparts with their breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside – and it was an absolutely fabulous day out! We can’t wait for our next visit.

Things are heating up at Groveland Park!

Things are heating up at Groveland Park!
Something special happened here at Groveland Park this month – we were visited by both old and new faces when the crew from our local fire station stopped by at our Bexleyheath care home. This is something we try to do each year and as always, they didn’t disappoint.

We believe that these visits are essential when it comes to the welfare of our residents and additionally, everyone thoroughly enjoys finding out what’s new and people have fun sharing stories over refreshments and pasties. These visits are beneficial for both parties, as the crew had the opportunity to reassure residents, taking the time to build that all-important trust and confidence that they would always be well cared for should an emergency ever arise. Next time, we’re off to visit them, so watch this space!

Nightingale Dogs at Groveland Park

Nightingale Dogs at Groveland Park
We had a great time with Jenny, Tim and their adorable fur babies from Nightingale Dogs this month. Every visit is different, with great interaction between the humans and their furry friends – and this time, new ideas and amazing props came into play, which was great to see. The dogs’ behaviour and customs are always guaranteed to put smiles on faces, giving the people living here at Groveland Park lots of attention and a loving connection, all by taking part in this interactive session. It’s wonderful to see.

We always look forward to hearing their latest news and finding out all about what the dogs have been up to in-between visits, which sometimes can be very mischievous as you can imagine, with a house full of dogs and a garden full of chickens!

A sunny day in Southend-on-Sea

A sunny day in Southend-on-Sea
One of the most popular places for us to take residents for a good old British day out is to the seaside! And our destination of choice tends to be Southend-on-Sea, situated on the Thames Estuary in Essex - we visited this month and had a great time.

Southend holds a special place in many residents’ hearts, taking them back to childhood memories when they enjoyed family holidays eating fish and chips, and strolling along the pier with an ice cream in hand.

The seaside town also served as a meeting place for many during the war when partners were on leave. We have also made new memories too, visiting the Sealife Adventure aquarium, enjoying freshly made doughnuts and sitting in the sunshine.

We’re sure it won’t be long until we’re back in Southend-on-Sea once again.
